HOW TO PROPERLY CARE FOR CLOTH DIAPERS

Reusable diapers can be very convenient, eco-friendly, and comfortable to use if you know how to care for them properly.

Based on modern principles of washing reusable diapers, we have prepared a clear guide to help you prevent odors, ammonia buildup, and maintain the longevity of your diapers.

1. Storing Dirty Diapers

  • Store diapers dry.

  • Use a breathable bag, e.g., a waterproof Tvari Motinystė bag.

  • Perform a pre-wash within 24–48 hours of use.

  • Do not leave diapers unwashed for 3–4 days, as this increases the risk of ammonia buildup.

2. Pre-Wash

Purpose: Remove urine and solid residues before the main wash.

Instructions:

  • 30–60 min program / gentle cycle (e.g., Synthetics);

  • 40°C (104°F);

  • Half the usual detergent amount;

  • Half-load of the drum with used diapers (if load is small, add wet towels);

Avoid short 15–20 min cycles – they are insufficient.

3. Main Wash

Purpose: Fully remove urine residues and dirt.

Instructions:

  • 2–3 hour Cottons program (or another long wash cycle);

  • 40°C (104°F);

  • Full detergent amount according to package instructions;

  • Load 2/3–3/4 of the drum (if load is small, add wet towels or wash with other laundry);

  • Wash every 2 days (if pre-wash done within 48 hours, can wash every 3–4 days);

  • If suds remain, perform an extra rinse.

If odors appear, wash every 2 days.

4. Drying

  • Dry in a dry, warm, and well-ventilated area.

  • Can be dried in a dryer at low temperature.

5. Preventing Odors and Ammonia

Ammonia develops when urine salts remain in the fabric, not due to dirt.

Prevention tips:

  • Pre-wash every 24–48 hours;

  • Use enough detergent;

  • Use sufficient water;

  • Use a long wash program;

  • Avoid overloading the drum, but ensure it is sufficiently loaded;

  • Change routine if odors appear.

6. What to Do if Ammonia Odor Appears

If odor occurs immediately after the baby urinates, better washing is needed.

Procedure:

  1. Perform a good pre-wash (40°C, 30–60 min, half detergent).

  2. Perform a long main wash (40°C, full detergent).

  3. If odor disappears after 1–2 washes – all is fine.

Note: Washing and care recommendations are based on reliable reusable diaper care sources, including Clean Cloth Nappies.

CHLORINE DISINFECTION

Chlorine disinfection is only necessary in rare, specific cases, such as:

  • Persistent odor after 2–3 thorough washes;

  • Strong, “sharp” odor in a dry diaper;

  • After viruses or diarrhea;

  • Presence of mold.

1. Preparation

  • Use liquid chlorine, e.g., standard 5% or 6% concentration.

  • Mix at a ratio of 1 part chlorine : 100 parts water, or follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Use a plastic bucket or bag resistant to chlorine.

2. Disinfection

  • Add chlorine to a bucket filled with cold water (do not use hot water).

  • Place clean, pre-washed diapers into the bucket (after pre-wash and main wash).

  • Soak the diapers for 5–10 minutes.

  • After soaking, rinse thoroughly with cold water to remove all chlorine residues. You can rinse manually by filling with cold water and repeating 2–3 times.

3. After Disinfection

  • Perform a full main wash at 40°C with the recommended amount of detergent.

  • Dry as usual.
